I was all geared up this morning for a good workout. Mini JAG went with his dad to the Rememberance Day ceremony so I made use of my time alone and had a walk to the gym.
It was only when I was getting my stuff ready before I went that I flicked through my book to check what weights I used in my 3rd routine, only to realise that in all the time I have been doing this routine (though it has been sporadic of late) I have never done my 3rd routine!
So, I looked at the exercises and looked over the weights I used last time I performed each exercise and used that record to aim for. Shockingly, I have not flat bench pressed for over 2 months! Appalling!
It comes as no surprise then that my strength was pathetic! I am really disappointed with my performance, particularly on my Bulgarian split squats, seated row and flat bench. I know it's not down to lack of energy, I had a lovely breakfast of scrambled eggs & egg whites on 2 slices of wholemeal seeded toast and I was hydrated well enough, so I can only put it down to my slacking off over the recent couple of months.
Here is what I did, please don't laugh at my pathetic weights:
Bulgarian Split Squats: 10kg DB's - 8/8, 8/8, 8/8
Stiff Legged Deadlift - 50kg - 6, 6, 6 - My grip failed miserably!
Calf Press - 70kg - 12, 12, 12
Seated Row - 30kg - 6, 6, 4
Dumbbell Bench Press - 12kg - 8, 5, 3 - Absolutely gutted at how my strength has decreased
Upright Row - 15kg - 10, 8, 8
Lying Tricep Extension - 12kg - 8, 8, 6
Barbell Curl - 12kg - 10, 8, 8
Despite feeling disappointed with my performance, I still feel better for getting out and doing it. I realised I was trying to talk myself out of working out when I woke up this morning and I have to give myself a good talking to and tell myself to stop slacking. I wanted to stay home, in pj's, in the warm but I forced myself to get changed, walk the 15 minutes there as briskly as possible to keep warm and I am *really* glad that I did.
I also noticed whilst working out that for possibly only the 2nd or 3rd time ever, I was not the only female in the free weights area! Sadly, the 2 girls that were working out appeared to be the sort that feel lifting anything bigger than 5kg will bulk them up. They performed a few upper body exercises such as bicep curls, tricep kickbacks and lateral raises but used the same, 3kg dumbbell for every exercise. Still, at least they were there using the weights rather than spending all their time on the cardio machines or the ruddy abductor/adductor machines like so many others.
Anyway, my workout, including the walk there and back, earned me a lovely 530 calories - yay!
Really hope I can stay on track now for the rest of the day. I have a chicken & mixed bean salad planned for lunch followed by a snack of an apple spread with hazelnut butter and a dinner of a Tuna steak with roasted veggies.
The entries are coming in thick and fast for my Nakd Giveaway but there is still plenty of time to enter if you haven't already. The competition doesn't close until Friday 13th November, when the winners will be chosen at random. Good luck!

Hey hun
Stick with the weights your strength will come back sooner than you think :-) x
er yeah, low weights, you are such a weakling. *cough* Seriously, you are starting from a pretty good base and as chocolatebutton says you will just zip pack up the weights with each session
Thanks Choc, it's just disheartening when I was lifting so much more before. I'm sticking at it though, and I *will* get back to where I was.
Deise, my lovely, thanks hun. They seem heavy but they aren't that heavy for me, I am capable of lifting more. It's my own fault for slacking but no more!
the weights will come back much quicker than you think. it's not like you're starting for the first time eh? your body will soon think to itself 'ah yes I remember this!'
I had an enforced 6 week layoff a couple of years ago after surgery. first time on the tready I managed a whole 10 minutes before collapsing in a heap. it was only a short time and I was back to running for 30, 40 and 50 minutes.
:-) x
Thanks mate, I know you're right. I really do need to give myself a break don't I?
Muscle memory is a great thing!
get some chalk missy. supercharge your grip. you'll also need to moisturise after as it dries out your skin.
YES, GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK!!! (though I know from experience that takes a serious amount of self administered arse kicking it has to be done) Once you get some pattern back to your gym visits you'll be lifting like a Bulgarian shot putter in no time....err....that'll be nice won't it? ;P
Dopey! You made it to my blog - yay! My gym is so straight, if I turned up with chalk seriously, I'd get even more gawped at than I do at present. I long to join a "proper" gym!
Deise, I know you're right mate - I guess we're all our own worst critic which is both good and bad. Fingers crossed for tomorrow's workout.
Lol, you should see the gym I've been haggling at. Pumper heaven. So many twigs and chicken legs
Oh god, chicken legs! There are so many of those at my gym! There is one guy who us about 6ft 4" and has HUGE upper body - sadly, it is balanced on two chicken legs - so comical!
Then there are the bicep boys who forget they have muscles other than their non-existent biceps.
In all the 3 years I have been at my gym, I have only ever seen 2 guys deadlifting and I am yet to see a guy perform squats that are not mere bounces under the bar.
You should see the looks I get when I do ATG squats - people look at me like I'm making up my own exercises or something! And of course, you have the obligatory guy that stands behind string t my ass, forgetting that there are floor to ceiling mirrors in front of me - hello, I can see you perv!
